PRP APPLICATION

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), commonly used in the treatment of hair loss, is obtained from the patient's own blood, hence it is described as an "autologous" treatment method. Various techniques are employed to obtain PRP. Blood taken from the patient is placed into tubes containing anticoagulants, subjected to centrifugation, and as a result, the platelet-rich plasma portion is separated. Activators like thrombin and calcium chloride can be used for platelet activation. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy can yield effective results in treating hair loss due to its growth factors and cytokines.

PRP, when applied to the scalp, promotes hair follicle growth, leading to positive outcomes in androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss. In other words, PRP can reverse the miniaturization and weakening of hair seen in androgenetic alopecia. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), due to its high concentration of growth factors and cytokines, supports cell growth, cell differentiation, and angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) in the applied area. These effects are also observed in hair follicles, making PRP beneficial in the treatment of alopecia.

PRP is used in the treatment of male and female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) to convert thin (miniaturized) hairs into thicker (terminal) hairs. This treatment is particularly ideal for patients with thinning hair but who are not completely bald. PRP therapy is suitable for patients who do not wish to use minoxidil or finasteride, had to stop these medications due to side effects, or who have benefited from these drugs but seek better results.

Additionally, those who do not benefit from low-level laser therapy, and individuals with cicatricial alopecia (scarring hair loss) or alopecia areata that does not respond to standard treatments, might also benefit from this therapy. Although scientific studies demonstrating the effectiveness of PRP against hair loss are limited, this method is becoming increasingly popular. PRP treatment is administered to the areas experiencing hair loss through subcutaneous or intradermal injections. The frequency and number of sessions are determined as follows: It is applied once a month for the first 3 months. Thereafter, the treatment continues every 3 months for up to a year (at months 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12). After the first year, PRP can be applied every 6 months as maintenance therapy. This plan can vary depending on the patient's condition and response to treatment.
